The honest answer is that we do not know for sure.
The most likely answer however, which is backed up by months of research
and confirmed by eyewitness reports (including my own), is that this
creature is some kind of devil - or agent of the devil.
Texts across the centuries, including the Book of Star (a reference
point for Faust writer Johan Von Goethe) label he who walks among
us as 'the dark one', 'the man in black', 'Shuck' (presumably after
Black Shuck - the Devil's Dog), 'Apollyon', and 'Belial'.

The Book of Star says that he exists for one purpose only - to enslave
human souls.

By promising you your heart's desire, by using his dark powers to make
your wildest dreams come true.
Just like the snake in Eden (to which he owes his occasional serpentine
tail), he will try to persuade and convince you with a mixture of
truth and lies; he will be so very believable. Like a Faustian Mephistopheles,
he will offer the finest things in life, serve you the food and drink
of the Gods, grant you the power of kings, and bestow upon you skills
and talents that will leave the whole world in awe.
But it will come at a price...
He will ask for a 'simple thing' from you in return; he will ask you
to sign away your soul. The moment you do so, you shall be his forever.
Can anything be worth a human soul?

Because we have proof, through personal encounters and sightings such
as mine, and via the fourteenth century text, the Book of Star, which
describes the man in black (referred to as 'the dark one') as some
kind of Faustian demon.
It is written that he will grant any wish so asked for, be it riches,
lavish lifestyles, or even supernatural powers. Every luxury of this
world will be promised, and all he will ask for in return will be
a 'simple thing' that he will claim no-one really needs: their soul.

As yet, I am unsure. Knowledge about him is power over him.
I am hopeful that prior knowledge of his intention, combined with
knowledge of the signs of his approach will be enough
to defend you. Remember, it is not until you enter into a bargain
with him that you become his.
